CALL FOR PAPERS EXTENDED
TO MAY 1, 2007
"Decentering Asia"
What would Asian studies in the U.S. look like if its center shifted away from its dominant points of reference and reoriented in new directions? What significant insights could be gained by examining Asia’s multitudinous histories, cultures, conflicts, and peoples through imaginative lenses located in other less-trafficked localities? In an effort to explore these and other related questions that seek to redirect the field of Asian and Asian American studies toward newer and potentially more compelling directions, the 2007 New York Conference on Asian Studies presents the theme, “Decentering Asia.” The conference organizers intend multiple, if not fluid, readings of this theme, inclusive of, but not limited to:
- the study of Asia and Asian America decentered from what has traditionally been its predominant regional or ethnic foci and approaches;
- Asia itself decentered as the exclusive or primary locus of Asian studies and examined in relation to and along side studies of the rest of the world;
- the U.S. decentered as the principle locus of Asian American studies;
- Asia unbound by the conventional theoretical framework of civilizations, empires, and nation-states;
- Asia and Asian America viewed through interdisciplinary lenses and conceptualized at the intersection of multiple disciplinary practices.
As hosts of the 2007 NYCAS, the Asian and Asian American Studies Program at Binghamton University, invite panel and paper proposals to explore the theme of “Decentering Asia,” along with any other notable aspects of East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, Central Asian, West Asian, Asian American, and Asian diasporic studies.
