Majoring or Minoring in Asian American Studies

Major | Minor

The program offers a major in Asian and Asian American Studies along with four (4) different tracks:

•  Asian American Studies track (AA) , with particular focus on the social, cultural, and historical aspects of Asians in the U.S. and, more broadly, the Americas ;

•  Asian Comparative track (AC), with particular focus on a comparative study of Asia that encompasses two or more Asian countries;

•  Asian Specialization track (AS) , with particular focus on the language, culture, and historical aspects of one of the following Asian groups: Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.

•  South Asia track (SA) , with particular focus on the study of the diverse cultures and regions of South Asia .

The major, regardless of track, requires eleven (11) courses, at least six (6) of which must be at the 300- or 400-level.

All majors, regardless of track, must fulfill the three (3) common major core course requirements grouped in the following manner:

•  Choose one (1) of the following core Asian American studies courses:

•  AAAS 220 Asian American Cultural Representations
•  AAAS 267 Asian American History
•  AAAS 371 Asian Americas

•  Choose one (1) of the following core Asian studies courses:

•  AAAS 104 Asian Art and Architecture
•  AAAS 105 Introduction to Asian Philosophy
•  AAAS 106 East Asian Civilizations
•  AAAS 135 Cultures of China , Japan , and Korea
•  AAAS 277 Modern South Asian History
•  AAAS 369 Contemporary Asian Societies

•  All students must complete the core AAAS Major Seminar (AAAS 496)

In addition, students must complete courses required by the particular track they have chosen, as well as Asian and Asian American studies elective courses.

AAS majors may elect no more than one (1) independent study, and not more than one (1) internship and/or teaching practicum may be counted toward the major. Students may elect to take one course Pass/Fail. The AAAS program views the grade of D as passing but is considered unsatisfactory and unacceptable in fulfilling the major requirements.

Asian American Studies track:

For the Asian American Studies track , in addition to the three (3) core courses, students must complete four (4) track courses designated as Asian American . The list of these courses changes semester to semester and may include the following examples:

•  AAAS 267 Asian American History
•  AAAS 287A Diaspora and Media: Asian American Perspectives
•  AAAS 380L Eating Asian America : Food, Culture, Politics
•  AAAS 395 Community Internship
•  AAAS 450K Race as Metaphor
•  and others (contact the AAASP for a list of current courses)

In addition to the major core and AA track courses, students must complete four (4) additional elective courses in Asian and Asian American studies. These may be drawn from any of the three different track-designated courses and may include Asian language courses.

Asian Specialization track:

For the Asian Specialization track , in addition to the three (3) core courses, students must complete two (2) intermediate courses (203-204) of an Asian language* or demonstrate language proficiency at the 204 level.

In addition, students must complete four (4) track courses designated as Asian Specialization . The list of these courses changes semester to semester and may include the following examples grouped according to the three areas of specialization:

Chinese:

•  AAAS 273 Chinese Civilization
•  AAAS 472 Chinese Women and the Family
•  CHIN 280 Chinese Literature in Translation

Japanese:

•  AAAS 271 Japan to 1600
•  AAAS 372 20 th Century Japan

Korean:

•  AAAS 311 Language, Culture, and Society in Korea
•  KOR 210 Korean Civilization

In addition to the core and AS track courses, students must complete additional elective courses in Asian and Asian American studies. The language requirement for the Asian Specialization Track can alternatively be met through a demonstration of language proficiency at the 204 level. If the language proficiency requirement is met without taking at least two (2) language courses, additional electives must be completed to reach the eleven (11) courses required by the major. Exceptions may apply for heritage language speakers. Please contact the program for additional information.

South Asia Specialization track:

For the South Asia track , in addition to the three (3) core courses, students must complete four (4) track courses designated as South Asia . The list of these courses changes semester to semester and may include the following examples:•

In addition to the major core and SA track courses, students must complete four (4) additional elective courses in Asian and Asian American studies. These may be drawn from any of the three different track-designated courses and may include Asian language courses.

Asian Comparative track:

For the Asian Comparative track , in addition to the three (3) core courses, students must complete four (4) track courses designated as Comparative . The list of these courses changes semester to semester and may include the following examples:

•  AAAS 106 East Asian Civilizations
•  AAAS 284B Modern South Asian History
•  AAAS 375 Negotiating Contemporary Asia
•  AAAS 484A Nationalism in East Asia
•  AAAS 474 Colonial Culture in India and Indonesia

In addition to the core and AC track courses, students must complete four (4) additional elective courses in Asian and Asian American studies. These may be drawn from any of the three different track-designated courses and may include Asian language courses.

 

Summary of Major Requirements

 

 

  • The Asian and Asian American Studies major requires eleven (11) courses.
  • At least six (6) must be at the 300 or 400 level.
  • No more than one (1) may be an independent study.
  • No more than one (1) may be an internship or teaching practicum.
  • No more than one (1) may be taken Pass/Fail.
  • The grade of D is passing but is considered unsatisfactory and unacceptable in fulfilling the major requirements.

Minor in Asian and Asian American Studies

    The program offers a minor to students who wish to supplement their majors through participation in a cross-disciplinary program. The minor consists of the following requirements:

    •  A total of six (6) AAAS courses are required for the minor.

    •  Two (2) of the courses must be at the introductory level (100 or 200).

    •  Three (3) additional courses are required, at least two (2) of which must be at the 300 or 400 level.

    •  The AAAS Major Seminar (AAAS 496) or another 400-level AAAS seminar is required.

    •  At least one (1) course needs to be designated as Asian Studies.

    •  At least one (1) course needs to be designated as Asian American Studies.

    •  Up to two (2) Asian language courses may be applied toward the major.

    •  Only one (1) course may be taken Pass/Fail.

    •  At least four (4) courses must be completed at Binghamton University .

    •  Although the grade of D is passing, a grade of C- or better is necessary for a course to count toward the minor.

      No more than one course may be taken Pass/Fail. Students must complete at least four of the courses (24 credits) at Binghamton University. Although the Asian and Asian American Studies program views the grade of D as passing, a grade of C- or better is necessary for a course to count towards the minor.
